Reaction-bonded silicon carbide is fabricated through a process that combines silicon (Si) infiltration with a porous carbon preform. During sintering at high temperatures (typically 1,400–1,600°C), molten silicon reacts with carbon to form a secondary silicon carbide phase. The resulting composite material consists of primary Reaction bonded silicon carbide products grains bonded by a silicon/silicon carbide matrix. This method enables near-net-shape manufacturing with minimal dimensional shrinkage, making it ideal for complex geometries.
